Moda Operandi: What inspires you on a daily basis?
Alexandra Von Furstenberg: I am constantly inspired by nature, art, fashion, machinery, and architecture.
M’O: How would you describe your overall aesthetic?
AVF: Modern, sleek, and elegant.
M’O: Why furniture design?
AVF: After a decade in fashion, the next, most natural move for me was furniture. Furniture is like functioning art; it’s just as much an expression of style and taste.
M’O: Favorite decade?
AVF: ’70s
M’O: Least favorite decade?
AVF: ’20s
M’O: What are your favorite pieces and why?
AVF: The Charm Bowl, inspired by hard candy, and the Brilliant Console, inspired by a compression clamp.
M’O: What piece has the best story?
AVF: The bullet Table—I worked with a gemologist to perfect the cuts, so it would emulate an emerald-cut diamond.
M’O: Finish the sentence “What makes a home beautiful is…”
AVF: When you can sense the owners’ personal style amongst the décor chosen and where it’s placed—energy has everything to do with it.
